Photo Gallery of Syngnathids by Graham Short

As an underwater photographer, I have a fondess for syngnathids, a distinctive family of fish which includes the seahorses, seadragons, pipehorses, and pipefish. My favorite dive spots to photograph them are in Australia and Indonesia.

These fish are quite majestic, moving with such slow grace, and when it comes to their beautiful appearance, their survival depends on their ability to camouflage themselves by blending in their environment or reducing their size down to one centimeter.

Syngnathids are highly vulnerable creatures due to their sedentary nature, sparse distributions, highly structured populations, exposure to pollution, and collection for medicinal purposes.

I hope these photos convey how incredible, special, and beautiful these fish are, as such they deserve attention from researchers and especially the public for education and conservation efforts. .
